General Post-Operative Instructions for Oral Surgery
Please read the following instructions carefully for optimal healing after your surgical treatment. Following these guidelines can minimize discomfort and promote a smooth recovery process.
Bleeding:
It’s normal to experience slight oozing or periodic bleeding for up to 10 days after surgery.
Apply constant, firm pressure using the provided gauze for one hour. If bleeding persists, use a new gauze or a moistened tea bag for 1 ½ hours.
Avoid spitting or rinsing your mouth on the day of surgery.
Swelling:
Apply an ice bag to the operated side for 20 minutes on, 10 minutes off, for the first 2-3 hours to minimize swelling.
Swelling typically peaks two days after surgery and gradually subsides afterward.
Pain:
Discomfort is expected, and medication will be prescribed to manage it.
Take a full dose of pain medication every 3-4 hours for effective relief.
Rinse gently with warm salt water the morning after surgery and avoid smoking or drinking through a straw to prevent dry socket.
Diet:
Eat whatever you prefer but opt for soft or liquid foods for comfort.
Maintain good dietary intake, even if limited to liquids.
Nausea:
Small sips of tea, 7 Up, or ginger ale may help alleviate nausea during the initial postoperative period.
Post–Operative Conditions:
- Swelling and bruising are normal.
- Numbness, tightness of muscles, slight earache, or sore throat may occur.
- Discoloration at the injection site if intravenous anesthesia is given.
